Paul Vinson "Skip" Hawkins Jr. of Comfort died Monday, at home, after a long illness of cancer.
He was retired from Peabody Coal, a member of the UMWA and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a 1964 graduate of Sherman High School, Seth.
His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting and camping. He also enjoyed raising a garden and giving family and friends the fruits and vegetables of his labor.
He fought a long, hard fight and remained strong and positive until the end. He was quick to take your hand when someone entered his room and instructed each person not to cry. He had given his life to the Lord and told family that he was ready to meet his savior.
He leaves behind many friends, having lived most of his adult life in Boone County.
Those left to cherish his memory included his wife, Nancy of Comfort, and his sons, Michael and Matthew of Comfort. The light of his life was his granddaughter, Zoey, who he had raised. He leaves behind two sisters, Nancy Hawkins of Orgas and Kathy (Gary) Cash of Madison, and also brothers, Samuel (Patty) of Seth and Jason (Danielle) of Orgas, and his sister-in-law, Emogene Hawkins of Whitesville. He was very proud of his grandchildren, Lance and Amberly of North Carolina and Chase of Clear Fork. He had a host of nieces and nephews who meant the world to him.
He enjoyed the friendship of his extended family, including sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and all of his cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Vinson Sr. and Mary Protan Hawkins; his son, Paul Vinson III; and a brother, Daniel Edward.
Rest in peace our dear husband, Dad, brother-in-law, cousin and friend. You will be missed!
A memorial service will be 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Racine Community Center, Racine Park, with Eugene Spurlock officiating. Friends may call at 7 p.m.
