Weather service confirms tornado near Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down near Fairmont this week during a summer storm.

The weather service says the EF-1 tornado traveled about 2 miles along a narrow path between the communities of Smithtown and Opekiska on Tuesday afternoon.

The tornado carried winds of up to 100 miles per hour and snapped or uprooted numerous hardwood trees. A tree fell through the roof of a garage, causing minor damage.

No injuries were reported.
