A motorist died on Thursday afternoon after he crashed on Interstate 79, and after he collided with several vehicles in and around Charleston, authorities said.
The man’s 2003 Chevrolet Impala reportedly struck several vehicles on Interstate 64 in Charleston before getting on Interstate 79 and heading north, then rolling multiple times between the Big Chimney and Elkview exits around 2 p.m. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from his car, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Cpl. B.D. Humphreys said in a news release.
The driver was taken to CAMC General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On Friday, police identified the driver as Michael Lee McKinney, 46, of Clay.
No other injuries were reported from the crashes.
The first vehicle hit was in Kanawha City near Baskin-Robbins on MacCorkle Avenue, according to a Kanawha Metro 911 dispatcher. Crash reconstruction experts from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crashes.
