HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. – The Harpers Ferry Historic Landmarks Commission has created new standards and guidelines to guide preservation and development in the town’s historic district.
A public forum on the standards and guidelines is scheduled tonight at Town Hall.
Landmarks commission member Steve Sherry tells The Journal that the goal is bring the town’s ordinances into compliance with state standards on how building projects are approved.
Under the new standards and guidelines, the landmarks commission and the Harpers Ferry Planning Commission will review project requests. Previously, the Town Council reviewed and approved project requests.
Sherry says the state requires appointed officials to approve project requests, not elected officials.
