Police: parents buried infant in national forest

By Staff reports

A man and woman from out of state were arrested in West Virginia after burying a 26-day-old infant in the George Washington National Forest, state police said Wednesday.

Joseph Christy, 32, who has several reported addresses including Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Summer McDaniel, 26, from Maryville, Missouri, were arrested for child neglect resulting in death, concealment of a dead human body, and conspiracy to commit a felony, according to a release from West Virginia State Police Spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous.

On July 5, Morgantown police arrested the two on child neglect charges when they allegedly had their four children in the car while involved in a police vehicle pursuit that ended at the 146 mile marker of Interstate 79.

After interviews with the vehicle occupants, police learned Christy and McDaniel allegedly buried their infant child in the national forest in the Wardensville area of West Virginia.

The infant’s body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine cause of death.

The four children are now in the custody of DHHR.
