4-run 4th carries Rome past Power 5-1

ROME, Ga. — The Rome Braves used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the West Virginia Power 5-1 Monday night at State Mutual Stadium.

West Virginia (18-20) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Rome starter Matt Marksberry. The Power’s Austin Meadows walked with two down and advanced to second on error, and West Virginia’s Edwin Espinal drove in Meadows to give Power starter Felipe Gonzalez the early advantage.

Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. In the sixth, Rome scored four runs on a walk and four straight hits off West Virginia reliever Zack Von Rosenberg. The Braves added a run in the seventh off Von Rosenberg (1-2) to close the scoring.

Marksberry (4-6) notched the win with seven innings of work, allowing just three hits and two walks. The Power offense did not record a base hit after the third inning.

West Virginia and Rome conclude the series at 7 tonight. Buddy Borden with start for the Power against the Braves’ Steve Janas.

West Virginia is idle on Wednesday and begins a seven-game home stand Thursday night.
