Developer planning duplexes near Hurricane Wal-Mart

By Staff reports
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- A developer is planning a new 23-unit, mostly duplex subdivision near the Hurricane Wal-Mart.

Putnam County Planner John Butterworth said the county planning commission is set to vote Aug. 26 on preliminary plat approval for Peaceful Acres, which would be located off Orchard Park Road.

James Judson Thompson, owner of Hurricane-based developer J.T. Contracting, says the subdivision will include 11 duplexes and one single-family home. He intends to rent the 1,600-square-foot duplexes out for $1,600 per month, and provide tenants lawn mowing and snow removal.

“But if the market won’t do it, you know, I’ll sell them,” Thompson said.

If the planning commission approves the development, he said he expects construction to begin Sept. 1 and end in December of 2016. Putnam currently lacks multi-family housing, according to the comprehensive plan the county commission passed in March.

Also at the Aug. 26 meeting, to be held 7 p.m. in Room 202 of the old courthouse in Winfield, the planning commission will consider allowing the county Board of Zoning Appeals to approve permits for taxi services in C1, or suburban-commercial, zoning districts.
