A Harrison County child is expected to make a full recovery after accidentally shooting himself in the foot, police said.
A 3-year-old boy from the Wyatt area got access to a .22-caliber gun that was either on top of a shelf or cabinet or inside a cabinet, according to Harrison County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Jeff McAtee.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Thursday.
The father and a 12-year-old brother were home at the time.
McAtee said officers are still trying to figure out if the child possibly climbed the cabinet or shelf to get the gun.
McAtee said it was a “through and through” gunshot wound.
“It missed all the bones in his foot,” he said.
The case is still under investigation.
No charges had been filed as of Thursday evening.
Investigators still needed to interview the 12-year-old child and possibly conduct another interview with the father, McAtee said,
