James E. "Jim" Adkins, 79, of Charleston, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington.
He was retired from the United States Postal Service with 37 years of service.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Charleston and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, for over 50 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in special services.
Jim was a graduate of Charleston High School, where he lettered in basketball with fellow teammate, Rod "Hot Rod" Hundley.
He was dedicated to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Joan Adkins; mother, Ruth; and brother, Vernon.
He is survived by his son, James (Kathy) Adkins of Hurricane; daughter, Lesley (Pat) Burriss of Charleston; brother, Jack (Patty) Adkins of Charleston; grandchildren, Catherine Mullen, Jamie Adkins, Sarah Burriss and Ellen Burriss; and step-grandchild, Bryan Escue.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel, Charleston, with the Rev. Dr. Jim Roberts officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church's Ruffner Room.
