A brief police standoff near CAMC General Hospital ended with no one hurt late Thursday.
Lt. Scott Blankenship of the Charleston Police Department said a man with a terminal illness apparently became despondent while being treated at the hospital late Thursday. A little before 10 p.m. he told staff he was going outside to smoke a cigarette, but instead ran to his apartment nearby, where he locked himself inside. Blankenship said police were concerned because the man had threatened to kill himself and was known to have guns in the house.
Washington Street and Morris Streets were briefly shut down while police surrounded the apartment, eventually forcing their way inside, Blankenship said. The man was taken into custody without further incident.
Blankenship said several guns were found in the house and removed. No charges were expected to be filed.
