Man charged in stabbing death of WVU student

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown police say a Maryland man has been charged in the stabbing death of a 19-year-old West Virginia University student.

Police said in a news release that Devonte Waites was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital after being stabbed in the abdomen Thursday morning. Waites, a freshman communications student from Fairmont, was stabbed during a fight at a Morgantown bar, according to police.

After interviewing several witnesses and viewing video surveillance, police arrested Robert Hernandez, 33, of Cumberland, Maryland, during a traffic stop. Hernandez has been charged with first-degree murder.
