Roundup: Capital’s Slater competes in China

Tristan Slater, Capital’s two-time Class AAA boys pole vault champion, participates this week in the World Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, as a member of Team Canada.

Slater, who has dual citizenship in Canada and the U.S., vaults in the qualifying round beginning at 7 a.m. EDT Friday. If he reaches the medal round (top eight), he competes again at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25. If he’s out of the top eight, it’s at 9:20 p.m. that same day.

PREP FOOTBALL: The Boone County Grid Classic scrimmages will be held Friday, Aug. 22, at Scott High School. All three Boone County high schools — Sherman, Van and Scott — will be competing.

The event features three officiated football scrimmages. Each scrimmage will consist of two fifteen-minute quarters with a continuously running game clock. The first scrimmage begins at 7:30 with Scott facing Sherman. At 8:45, Van faces Sherman and at 10 Van meets Scott.

The event will be Military Appreciation Night and all current and former military personnel will be recognized. The West Virginia National Guard will also on hand with interactive games and displays. Former college football coaches Don Nehlen and Bob Pruett will also be in attendance and will sign autographs before and after the opening ceremony.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremony slated to begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for Military personnel. Midget league players wearing uniforms will receive free admission.
