John Wesley Dumont, 89, of Peterstown, formerly of South Charleston, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton. Born Sept. 2, 1924 in South Charleston, he was the son of the late Edgar Alfred Sr. and Virginia Nell Jarvis Dumont. John had retired from Union Carbide as a computer maintenance engineer. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and flew 50 missions as a bombardier. One of these sorties involved escorting the late Joseph Kennedy's plane in a secret mission known as "Operation Anvil." John was also a member of the Charleston American Legion Post 200, past member and officer of the Bozoo Ruritan Club and Peterstown Rotary Club, West Virginia Archaeological Society and the Monroe County Historical Society. Mr. Dumont was also a member of the Peterstown United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and sister-in-law, Robert Lee Dumont and Doris Mae; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Jean French and husband, Robert, and Alice June Floyd Bishop and husbands, Lee Floyd and Herbert Bishop; and brother-in-law, Kellis Gillespie.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Nell Dean Burgess Dumont; one daughter, Michelle "Shelly" Dumont Weeks and husband, Michael, of Wytheville, Va.; brother, Edgar Alfred Dumont Jr. and wife, Bette Dale, of Scott Depot; sister, Virginia Nell Dumont Gillespie of Hurricane; four grandchildren, John Dumont Weeks and Matthew Ryan Weeks of Wytheville, Va., Brandon Michael Weeks and wife, Andrea, of Dothan, Ala., and Ashley Weeks Holley of Bassett, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Carson Dale Holley and Saydee Cole Holley.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, 4122 MacCorkle Ave., South Charleston, WV 25309, with Dr. John Sauvage officiating.
Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.
