Suicide prevention, awareness walk set in Charleston

By The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A support group for people who have lost loved ones to suicide is planning an awareness event this weekend in Charleston.

The fourth annual Walk for Suicide Prevention is set for noon Saturday at Magic Island.

Organizers Chuck and Debbie Cardwell lost their 29-year-old daughter to suicide in 2008.

The Charleston Daily Mail reports the event is free, although donations will be accepted for Messages of Hope, a nonprofit suicide awareness and prevention group.

Last year’s event drew 250 participants.

Awareness of mental health issues and other factors leading to suicide have stepped up since actor Robin Williams killed himself earlier this month.
