Moments in Time: Seymour’s Grocery

J. Waters/
Seymour’s Grocery — I’ve learned that the simplest photos often bring the most response. Take this photo: It’s Florida Street right off Washington Street West. In the background is Cunningham Funeral Home, while the middle shows a little grocery store. That tiny store meant a lot to generations of kids growing up. It was Seymour’s Grocery, and it was operated from the late ’40s through the early ’70s by the same family. Thousands of children bought candy, pop and hot dogs from Seymour’s. The main reason was its proximity to Tiskelwah grade school. Some kids, however, even walked from Wilson Junior High. Every neighborhood had a little store like this, and I’ll bet you can remember the store you visited as a child, too.
