Roundup: Power fall to Kannapolis in series finale

Eddy Alvarez had four hits and a pair of RBIs as visiting Kannapolis registered a 7-1 win over the West Virginia Power on Sunday, snapping the Power’s three-game winning streak.

A crowd of 1,668 attended the game at Appalachian Power Park.

The Intimidators accumulated 14 hits total, including two each from Danny Hayes, Jacob Morris, Tyler Williams, and Michael Danner.

Power starter Buddy Borden (7-8) had a good outing despite taking the loss, yielding two runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out nine and walking none.

Edwin Espinal and Austin Meadows each doubled for the Power.

Chris Freudenberg (2-1) got the win for Kannapolis (30-33), tossing six innings and giving up a run on four hits and two walks while punching out five.

West Virginia (31-30) will have a day off before traveling to Lexington to begin a three-game series on Tuesday.

WVU women win: The West Virginia women’s soccer team rallied from a 2-0 defiit and picked up a 3-2 win over Missouri at University Park, Pa. on Sunday.

Kelsie Maloney had a goal and two assists for the No. 10 Mountaineers while Kate Schwindel scored West Virginia’s first and game-winning goals.

MU women draw: Kristine Culicerto scored a pair of goals as the Marshall women’s soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with VCU on Sunday in Huntington.

Alyssa Cathey scored a goal for the Thundering Herd (0-1-1) as well.

Maren Johansen scored all three goals for the Rams.
