CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Irish eyes are smiling on Charleston, with a brand-new pub that was scheduled to open its doors this past Friday. Copper Pint, the latest venture from owner Vicente Cruz, offers guests a taste of rustic Ireland with heavy wood finishes, lush leather and plenty of Guinness and green.
Offering craft brews on tap and featuring favorites like Irish Car Bombs (a cocktail of Baileys Irish Cream, Guinness Stout and Jameson Irish Whiskey) and the Irish Apple (a twist on the classic Washington Apple, substituting Jameson for Crown Royal), there’s no shortage of traditional drinks to wet your whistle and make every day St. Patrick’s Day on Kanawha Boulevard.
Cruz brings to the table more than 20 years of bar and restaurant management experience, after owning the Outback Steakhouse for over a decade and then moving to open Vino’s, a two-story bar and dance club on the Boulevard last year.
He and his brother, Robert, have worked to open Copper Pint for a little over two months, managing time between the pub and Vino’s next door.
After purchasing the space for Copper Pint, Cruz worked to refurnish, refurbish and beautifully restore the interior. While there is the fair share of updates and improvements, the rustic Irish aura is well represented. Cruz maintained the deep red wood floors, and after multiple coats of lacquer, they now shine brighter than a freshly minted penny.
Did someone say “penny”? The original bar has been turned into a conversation piece, topped with hundreds of shiny copper pennies and edged with bottle caps from a variety of brews. The effort was truly a labor of love and exemplifies the Copper Pint.
Cruz said he wanted to create “a laid-back atmosphere” for people to gather for a pint after work or celebrate on the weekend.
