Area roundup: Notre Dame tops Fairmont in MEC opener

Notre Dame used a balanced offensive attack and took advantage of Fairmont State turnovers for a 42-35 win Thursday night in Fairmont in both teams’ Mountain East Conference opener.

Fairmont State had 551 yards of total offense but was plagued by four interceptions and three fumbles. Notre Dame was nearly as proficient on offense, racking up 456 yards and only one turnover.

Notre Dame quarterback Ray Russ was 21 of 40 for 333 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. DaJuan Graham had six catches for 98 yards and Colton Wallace hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions. Tucker Spruill rushed 26 times for 118 yards to lead the attack on the ground.

Fairmont State quarterback Cooper Hibbs was 30 for 57 for 415 yards with four touchdowns, but tallied three picks. Wideout Fabian Guerra had 13 receptions for 247 yards and one touchdown. Daniel Monroe had 91 rushing yards on eight carries, most coming on a 67-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

MARSHALL SPORTS: The Marshall softball team announced Thursday that their popular Lil’ Sis Program will return for its 15th year during the 2014-15 season.

The program is open to girls in grades K-8. Each participating girl adopts a player on the Thundering Herd roster who will be their pen pal, role model and mentor.

To join the program, interested participants should fill out the Lil’ Sis brochure found at A $20 membership fee is required and girls will receive a T-shirt, minimum of two letters a month from a big sister, participation in select pregame locker room activities, team schedule poster and a Lil’ Sis Recognition Day and pizza party. WVU SOCCER: The WVU men's team shut out Virginia Tech 3-0 Thursday. Andy Devin, Jamie Merriam and Mike Desideno each scored once for the Mountaineers (3-0). Bevin also recorded two assists while Francio Henry had one. Virginia Tech's Ben Lundgaard and WVU's Brent Arnold each tallied five saves.

WVU TECH VOLLEYBALL: PENGUINS HOCKEY: YOUTH BASKETBALL: Sports City U Basketball Academy is hosting a Skills and Drill Clinic on Sept. 20. The clinic is for boys and girls ages 9-18 and focuses on shooting, ball-handling, scoring and finishing mistakes.
