One person died after a boat capsized in the New River in the Cunard area of the New River Gorge on Thursday morning.

Christina Schneider, 46, fought the current as two other people swam to shore, said Julena Campbell, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service.

The johnboat capsized before 10 a.m. in the Pinball rapids, Campbell said. Authorities found Schneider’s body down river in the Upper Railroad rapids.

It’s not clear what exactly caused the incident that killed Schneider.

The Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department and Jan-Care Ambulance Service responded after the incident.

Campbell said none of the boat’s occupants wore life jackets that day.

“Even for just a little bit of time on the river, it’s important to keep that life jacket on,” she said.
