Jim Barach's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center
Cooler With Rain...Maybe Even Some Snow For The Weekend...
The groundhog gave mixed predictions across the country on Thursday, and while it certainly doesn't look like winter is finally trying to move in we will see cooler temperatures the next few days with rain and maybe even some snow. The weekend will start out with cloudy skies on Saturday with rain showers starting in the west and spreading east as a warm front moves into the region. The showers will arrive in the Charleston area by the afternoon hours and we should pick up between a half inch and an inch of rainfall by Sunday morning. Saturday's high temperature will be 50 degrees.
Because the rain is associated with a warm front, we could see temperatures remaining cool enough to the north and over mountains for some morning snow, sleet or freezing rain. The low pressure system will move to the south on Sunday which will make for rain showers in the morning. The moisture will move out before the cooler air moves in so it
should remain as a rain event for the region. Sunday's high temperature will drop to 44 degrees.
Monday will see high pressure move back into the region which will bring back partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. Monday's high temperature will warm to 51 degrees. A weak cold front will move through Monday night which will mean partly cloudy skies on Tuesday and it should remain dry. However, the temperature will drop to 47 degrees. Another dry front will move through on Wednesday which will mean partly cloudy skies with an even cooler temperature. The high temperature will cool to 42 degrees despite abundant sunshine.
Thursday will see a cold front move in which will make for mostly cloudy skies and rain showers that could change over to snowflakes at night. The high temperature will only make it to 40 degrees. Cold air moving in behind the front along with another weather disturbance will mean cloudy skies with scattered snow showers. The high temperature will be a chilly 34 degrees.
The next weekend will see high pressure move in for Saturday which will make for partly cloudy skies and a bit of a warm up. The high temperature will make it to 38 degrees. Sunday will be partly cloudy and dry as high pressure will still be in control. The high temperature will warm to 45 degrees. A storm system will move in on Monday which will bring another shot of cold air that will produce cloudy skies and snow showers. Monday's high temperature will cool to 37 degrees.
A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that skies were mostly clear overnight which allowed morning fog to form as forecast. The overnight low temperature was 27 degrees which came in five degrees off the forecast low temperature of 32 degrees as skies stayed clear longer than expected. Friday was mostly sunny as forecast with the high temperature topping out at 55 degrees in Charleston. That was five degrees cooler than the forecast high temperature of 60 degrees. Huntington's high temperature was 54 degrees. Neither city reported any rainfall.
Tonight: Skies will be mostly cloudy ahead of an approaching warm front. The overnight low temperature will be 34 degrees.
Saturday: The weekend will start off with cloudy skies and rain showers moving from the west to the east. Most areas can expect between a half inch to an inch of rainfall with a high temperature of 50 degrees. Cooler air will remain to the north where there will be cooler temperatures and a chance of snow, sleet or freezing rain in the morning hours.
Sunday: Rain showers will linger through the morning hours as the low pressure system and trailing cold front move through. The temperature will drop to 44 degrees.
Monday: High pressure will move back in across the region which will make for partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The temperature will warm to 51 degrees.
Tuesday: A dry cold front will move through the region which will leave skies partly cloudy but it will cool a bit. The high temperature will drop to 47 degrees.
Wednesday: Another dry cold front will make for partly cloudy skies but an even cooler day. The high temperature will drop again to 42 degrees.
Thursday: A cold front will move into the region which will make for mostly cloudy skies along with rain showers that will change over to snow at night. The high temperature will drop to 40 degrees.
Friday: The cold air moving in behind the front will make for cloudy skies and scattered snow showers. The high temperature will fall again to 34 degrees.
Saturday: The next weekend will see high pressure move in for a return to partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm a bit to 38 degrees.
Sunday: High pressure will again be the area's dominant weather feature which will mean partly cloudy skies and another dry day. The high temperature will warm to 45 degrees.
Monday: A storm system will bring in more cold air and enough moisture to make for cloudy skies and snow showers. The high temperature will fall to 37 degrees.
One Final Note: The average temperature for February is a whopping 14 degrees above normal. However, that is only after two days which is no big deal. With cooler weather on the way for much of next week, we will be much closer to normal by the time we reach next weekend!
