Ashley Smith's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center
Dry Weather Ends This Week...
Our perfect weekend is coming to a close and so is our lengthy dry spell. Today marks six days with no rain and while we're not hurting for rain we could use some. The rest of today will remain pleasant and dry with mostly sunny skies. Tonight will also be mainly clear but a weak wind should limit fog toward the morning. It will be another mild night with a low around 55. Heading into Monday we'll start things dry with continued sunshine. Highs will again reach the upper 80's topping out around 86. Then we're watching a couple of systems which will give us a promising shot at rainfall. We have a cold front to the west which looks to stay out of our region until late Monday and Tuesday. Another disturbance is a slow-moving coastal low that looks to bring some clouds as well as at least a chance for rain in the eastern mountains of the viewing area. I think any rain from that low will hold off until the afternoon or even later Monday. In Charleston and points west rain could start as early as 6:00 p.m. However, I think the cold front slows down as it pushes east and keeps us dry until after sunset. We'll have to watch the timing of this system as it progresses through the day. We're not expecting any severe storms but thunderstorms are likely. The coastal low will move northeast and out to sea Tuesday which should allow the cold front from the west to progress east into our area. That will bring an increased chance for showers and storms most of the day Tuesday across the entire area. Rain may be heavy at times and winds could be gusty. However, this front doesn't appear to pack much of a punch in our region. That cold front will drop our temperature Tuesday a bit down to 78. Another system we're watching is Tropical Storm Alberto. Alberto is currently about 100 miles south of Charleston, SC. It's moving at a very slow 6mph to the westsouthwest. Alberto could have a couple of impacts on our area early this week. One is that the storm may bring showers to extreme eastern parts of the viewing area. The other threat is the ability to slow down the eastward progression of the cold front in our area. In other words the cold front may stall out over the region bringing continued rain through at least Wednesday. This is another kind of 'watch and see' situation. That's what we'll be doing over the next couple of days. Alberto is not expected to have much of an impact on any land masses but heavy rain is a threat. Alberto looks to be closest to us sometime Tuesday before progressing northeast and eventually becoming extra-tropical by Wednesday.
Once Alberto pushes east that front will also be able to move east and out of here. That means Wednesday should be drier but lingering showers are possible. We can expect mostly cloudy skies with a high around 80.
As we end the week and look ahead to the Memorial Day Weekend forecast, there is only one word to describe the weather: HOT! Beginning Thursday temperatures will climb to the upper 80's and near 90. Thursday will be 87 with mostly sunny skies and Friday is a touch warmer. It looks like we will finally hit the 90-degree mark Sunday with continued dry weather and sunny skies. Make sure you plan to be near a pool or other form of water this weekend to keep cool. I guess summer really is almost here!
