Firefighters found the bodies of Linda Malarkey, 64, and her husband, Steven Malarkey, 65, inside this Morgantown house Thursday morning. Police believe Linda Malarkey was shot by her husband, who set the home on fire and killed himself.

A Morgantown man shot and killed his wife, set fire to their home and killed himself early Thursday, police said.

Firefighters responded to the corner of Morris Street and Watts Street at about 3:30 a.m., said Mark Caravasos, chief of the Morgantown Fire Department.

“Upon arrival, they had heavy fire and smoke showing from the building,” he said.

They found Steven Malarkey, 65, and Linda Malarkey, 64, with fatal gunshot wounds in a second-floor bedroom, according to a news release from the Morgantown Police Department.

Authorities believe Steven Malarkey killed himself after he shot Linda Malarkey, according to the release.

Detectives recovered a handgun from the home as firefighters fought the flames for hours, the release states.

“The origination of the fire is still being determined but early evidence indicates that the fire was started by one of the decedents,” it says.

Emergency responders took both victims to the medical examiner’s office in Charleston. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
