McDowell County native Homer Hickam, author of “Rocket Boys” and several other books, answers questions from Horace Mann Middle School eighth graders on Monday after speaking to them about growing up in Coalwood and going on to work at NASA. After hearing that the students had been learning about his books while studying West Virginia history, he stopped at the school for the visit Monday morning before continuing on to the state Capitol.

Author Homer Hickam, best known for his memoir “Rocket Boys” about growing up in McDowell County, stopped by Horace Mann Middle School in Kanawha City on Monday.
