A former law firm CEO officially announced his run for the U.S. House in West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.

Ralph Baxter, former executive with Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe, spoke at the firm’s global operations center in Wheeling to formalize his campaign plans. He filed pre-candidacy papers with the Federal Election Commission as a Democrat on Aug. 31.

In an announcement video on his campaign website, Baxter said he will break the mold of status quo politicians.

“We can sit back and wait for the same old politicians to turn the clock back to the 1950s, or we can seize control of our own economic destiny and look forward to the future,” he said.

Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., has held the seat since 2011 and has said he’s running for re-election.
