Prep roundup: Hoover raps out 12-5 win against Catholic

Derrick Chapman and Tanner Purdy combined to drive in nine runs as host Herbert Hoover earned a 12-5 prep baseball win Thursday against Charleston Catholic.

Chapman went 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs and Purdy went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs for the Huskies, while Brody Thomas knocked in two runs and Colten Rollyson doubled. Thomas Blaydes and Dominic Martin each went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Irish.

Cherokee, N.J. 10, Hurricane 0: Jack Walters went 3 for 3 with two doubles and drove in two runs and Jared Browning tossed a five-inning one-hitter during the Mingo Bay Classic in Socastee, South Carolina. Chandler Kelley doubled for the lone hit for Hurricane (16-4).

Capital 6, Riverside 3: Capital scored two runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh to put away host Riverside. Ryan Thomas went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Cam Thomas knocked in a run for the Cougars. Anthony Carfagna and Blake Wentz each had two hits and an RBI and Andrew Massey went 2 for 4 for the Warriors (2-12).

Buffalo 4, St. Joe 3: Hunter Whittington singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Buffalo edged visiting St. Joe. Whittington finished 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Ian O’Donnell went 2 for 4 for the Bison (8-9). Lenny Washington went 2 for 4 and John Hankins doubled for the Irish.

Brighton, N.Y. 11, St. Albans 0: Ryan Omara fired a five-inning three-hitter and Owen Davis drove in three runs for the visiting Barons (5-1) from New York. Four pitchers were used by St. Albans (16-3).

Ripley 6, Ravenswood 4: Ripley recorded 10 hits as it took down host Ravenswood. Lane Casto went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Tyler Haskins and Remy Boyce each collected two hits for the Vikings (13-7). Nick Taylor and Blake Bennett both doubled for the Red Devils (13-3).

Logan 4, Wayne 3: Matt Brown tallied 11 strikeouts and Braxton Goff singled in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Logan picked up a home win. Tyler Topping doubled for the Wildcats (8-7). Dakota McCloud went 2 for 4 with a double and Cayden Ross added two hits for the Pioneers.

Braxton County 16, Doddridge County 3: Braden Poling went 3 for 3 with five RBIs as Braxton County won on the road. Troy McMillion, Cam Long and Cody Dobbins each knocked in two runs for the Eagles. Andrew Friend doubled and Ben Rock had an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Softball

St. Albans 4, South Charleston 3: Jaden Wills recorded an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh to lift St. Albans to a road win. Wills finished with three RBIs, Julia VanCamp went 3 for 4 with an RBI and freshman pitcher Kensey Hudson had 10 strikeouts for the Red Dragons (13-8). Megan Walton went 2 for 3 for the Black Eagles.

Groveport 6, Poca 3: Groveport (Ohio) tagged the Dots (13-8) for four runs in the top of the seventh inning at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Molly Collins took the loss for Poca and Casey Skeens paced the Dots at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a stolen base.

Cabell Midland 5, Huntington 3: Cabell Midland plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to hold on for a home win. Rianna Kingery had two hits and Virginia Hardin doubled for the Knights (18-7). Camryn Michallas went 2 for 4 and Emilie McClellan doubled for the Highlanders (15-3).

George Washington 9, Capital 0: Brianna McCown fanned 12 in five no-hit innings as George Washington won at home. McCown and Jordan Bell each went 2 for 3, Emma Grove doubled and Katie Darnell hit a triple for the Patriots (13-6).
