Area roundup: Marshall softball wins 11th straight

The Marshall softball team won its 11th straight game as the Thundering Herd capped off a series sweep of Charlotte with an 8-0 win in six innings Sunday.

Marshall (20-4, 6-0 C-USA) struck early with a run in the first inning off a 49er fielding error and then tacked on another in the third before exploding for six more in the sixth.

Abigail Estrada provided the big blow in the final frame with a one-out grand slam to right field on the first pitch of her at-bat.

Jordan Dixon threw a complete-game one-hitter, while striking out four.

WVU BASEBALL: The West Virginia baseball team couldn’t quite cap off a three-game sweep of No. 10 Baylor Sunday in Waco, Texas, as the Mountaineers fell 5-1 at Baylor Ballpark.

Despite the loss Sunday, WVU (10-8, 2-1 Big 12) still came away with its first Big 12 series victory of the year after taking the first two games Friday and Saturday.

Baylor (16-4, 1-2) scored five runs on nine hits Sunday, while the Mountaineers managed just one run on nine hits. WVU is now 4-1 against top-25 opponents this season.

Offensively, sophomore Marques Inman was 3 for 4 for the Mountaineers, while Jackson Cramer and Kyle Davis had two hits apiece.

WVU starter Conner Dotson (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mountaineers now head to Penn State for a game Wednesday to close out a brutal 19-game road trip to open the season.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE BASEBALL: The Yellow Jackets were swept by Fairmont State in a doubleheader at home on Sunday in Mountain East Conference action.

The Falcons won the two games, 21-3 and 21-7, pounding out 47 hits en route to the victories, as West Virginia State’s losing streak has now extended to six games.

The Yellow Jackets (7-9, 0-4 Mountain East) got a couple of home runs from Phil Mandt and Trayvis Patterson in the first game of the day.

Kip Brewer and Hunter Bradley took the losses on the mound for WVSU.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE SOFTBALL: West Virginia State fell to UVa.-Wise in a doubleheader on the road in MEC play on Sunday.

Scoring was at a premium in the first game of the day, as the Yellow Jackets (14-10, 0-2 Mountain East) allowed two runs in the second inning and lost 2-1 to the Cavaliers. Then, the Cavaliers were able to hold off a WVSU rally in a 3-2 victory to close the doubleheader as the two teams opened conference play.

Madison Rafuson, Micca Mirabella and Brookelyn Hale had multi-hit games for the Yellow Jackets.

CHARLESTON BASEBALL: Shepherd snapped UC’s eight-game winning streak as they swept the Golden Eagles in a Sunday doubleheader at Triana Field.

The Rams allowed just six hits and topped Charleston 5-1 in the opening game.

Jonathan Carr took the loss on the mound for UC, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three. Ryan Pansch allowed just one run on six hits through six innings before Dan Galati struck out the side to finish the game.

UC jumped out in front early in Game 2, but eventually fell 12-4.

After the Golden Eagles plated a run in the first when Brice Arrington scored off an RBI-groundout from Lee Carneal, but Shepherd answered with runs in the fourth and fifth to take a lead it would not relinquish.

CHARLESTON SOFTBALL: The Golden Eagles scored in the top of the ninth inning to pick up a 3-2 victory over Concord on Sunday.

Jessie Rowe picked up the win on the mound in relief, throwing the final two innings and hot surrendering a hit. Freshman Haleigh Christopher came through big in the final inning, doubling down the left field line to drive in Karli Pinkerton.
