Regatta
What future?
Back in 1971, the 12-year-old son of riverboat mogul Charlie Jones listened to his father's tales of steamboat races and suggested a race on Charleston's lovely Kanawha River. Thus the Sternwheel Regatta began - and it grew into a glorious annual festival during the warm, poignant, end-of-summer period around Labor Day.
Reversals
Quick Obama actions
President-elect Barack Obama is moving swiftly to begin dealing with horrendous American problems he will inherit on Jan. 20. Foremost is the damaged U.S. economy, with 1.2 million American jobs lost in 2008. Another top concern will be finding the best exit from the unnecessary Iraq war that never should have been started by the Bush-Cheney White House.
Supreme mess
High court high jinks
Mercifully, the Nov. 4 election will put two replacement justices on West Virginia's controversy-battered Supreme Court - but the ugly storm over the high court shows no sign of quieting yet.
Political predictors might be foiled again
Events we witnessed in the 2008 presidential campaign should give pause to anyone foolish enough to speculate about 2012. Imagine your response four years ago if someone had predicted that in the 2008 election.

Catholics support Obama
I have read with great concern the response from the Catholic Church post-election 2008 - and realize that over half of Catholics in our country acknowledge voting for Barack Obama for president. I should say that I was born and raised in the Catholic faith, educated in Catholic schools and to this day am a practicing Catholic.

Make it easier to unionize workplace
Recently, I polled my economics students about how much money they needed annually for reasonable subsistence. The list included food, shelter, clothing, transportation, entertainment, insurance and similar items.

Saving GM means saving the future of U.S. production
It is said that as GM goes, so goes our economy. Reports out of Detroit seem all gloom and doom. The automaker may run out of cash late this year or early 2009. Merger talks between GM and Chrysler are suspended indefinitely and Ford is not too well, either. Sales of their gas-guzzling SUVs have slumped. Meanwhile, Honda announced construction of a technologically advanced manufacturing plant in Canada. I have not seen calls for a bailout for Toyota or Honda! What is going on?

Premiums will hurt teachers
The Public Employees Insurance Agency's proposed premium increase will dramatically diminish the quality of life and health care of West Virginia teachers and school service personnel. In turn, this will impact our ability to provide high-quality instruction and services to our schools, colleges and universities.
Ridgetop array of windmills proves to be no eyesore
When industries first proposed erecting wind farms on West Virginia's majestic crests, I thought the turbines would be an abomination like strip mines, desecrating the wonder of nature.
Talk about traditional values
It has been fun listening to Republicans talk about getting back to their roots - back to conservative values of sound fiscal policy, limited government and individual responsibility. We are told that the country is hungry for those values and would choose them if they were offered. I think the country just did.
OPINION: Dawn Miller: Savor this day
It's been a long time coming
We humans have an instinctive tendency to save little relics of momentous events. Memories fade. Subsequent events will crowd out the sublime sensation of being part of something significant. We want a tangible tether to it.
