A Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout is able to earn. The award shows the amount of skill, confidence, and courage that a scout has acquired throughout her Girl Scout journey.
Gold Award projects are not just a quick fix to a problem. Instead of providing a simple temporary repair, they demonstrate leadership skills in order to create a sustainable solution.
So much goes even into what may seem like the simplest Gold Award projects. A Girl Scout must use her time to be planning, researching, dedicating and ensuring her project will have a lasting impact.
Throughout the nation, only 6% of eligible Girl Scouts ever receive this award.
As a part of the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must issue a press release of her project. Not many people get to see a completed Gold Award, but I am honored to get to help the progression of one.
One Girl Scout is using her compassion, smarts and determination to help make a difference in the lives of others, one card at a time.
“There are about 1.3 million residents in nursing homes in America. It’s estimated that 60% of them never get visitors or mail. It got worse during the COVID-19 pandemic,” wrote Danielle Thor.
“My Girl Scout troop leader asked our troop to make a few cards. I had so much fun making cards that I decided to turn it into my Gold Award project.
“I made a Facebook page called ‘Spreading Cheer with Cards‘ where information is posted about how to make cards and where to deliver cards. Anyone is welcome to join and ask questions or share their ideas.”
Thor has YouTube channel also called “Spreading Cheer with Cards” where eight videos have been posted. The videos include how to make cards using objects around the house, sentiment ideas, how to contact nursing homes and several other things.
“The residents love getting cards and sometimes write letters back,” Thor said. “It is a wonderful way to help the elderly community so that they don’t feel as lonely and isolated.”
Thor has delivered over 5,500 homemade greeting cards to residents in the Charleston area.
