Do you have any resolutions set for 2019? Maybe you know what you would like to achieve, but is the goal you laid out practical? Do you have a plan?

One reason that so many people fall short on expectations that they set for themselves is simply because they do one of two things, or possibly both: they decide on a goal that may not actually be possible to achieve within the time span they give themselves and/or do not lay out a plan. So, here is a guide for those who have the determination to stick with their goal until the end. Hopefully, by the time 2020 rolls around, you will be satisfied by what you have achieved.

The first step is to decide on a goal. This part can actually be sort of tricky. The goal you select has to not only be realistic for anyone, but it has to be realistic for you. The reason I emphasize this is because everyone lives in their own unique way, so certain goals may not be easily achieved. This is not to say that it would be impossible, but it increases the chances for failure.

Furthermore, some goals just aren’t physically possible, or healthy. For example, it would not be healthy for someone to attempt to lose 50 pounds within the first two months of 2019. Find a resolution that will work for you. Some may be harder than others, but if you are set on tackling one of your tougher goals, it doesn’t hurt to try.

Secondly, once you have decided on a goal, or goals, that you believe will work for you, you have to decide on a course of action. If your resolution is to start jogging, it can be easy enough to get started, but making a schedule or a routine of some sort is the best way to assure that you continue to work toward your goal.

Instead of making your resolution that you would like to start jogging, change it to that you would like to start jogging for 15 minutes every Tuesday and Friday. Do you see the difference? By adding those sorts of details, it makes it much easier to hold yourself accountable. Without choosing certain times to work on your goal, it can be easy to fall into complacency. How many times do you have to put off your jog until tomorrow until it actually happens?

Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself, and have fun. Resolutions are all about making you feel better about who you are as a person, so you shouldn’t completely resent keeping up with them. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if you miss a day, or have a cheat meal. Those sorts of things are allowed, and as long as you pick up again with your goal afterward, it really will not hurt you that much in the long run.

To help keep you focused on your plan, find friends who are also working toward their own goals. Whether their desires are similar to your own or are for something completely different, having a group to go to for motivation is a great way to keep your eyes on the prize.

In conclusion, resolutions are all about what you would like to change in your own life, but that doesn’t mean you can’t accept the help and support of those around you. By settling on a goal, and making a plan to go with it, you’ve already fought half of the battle. If 2018 didn’t treat you right, do not be discouraged. You can make 2019 your time to shine! The start of a new year is all about letting go of what happened in the past year, and looking forward to the potential that the future holds. On the days you struggle, remind yourself how much you want to stay committed, and how happy it will make you at the end of the year, when you can reflect back and realize that you, indeed, made it.
