The hills will be alive with the sound of music this weekend, as the Appalachian Children’s Chorus invites runners and walkers to participate in the inaugural Miles of Melodies 5K Run/Walk this weekend in Charleston.
Sponsored by the Kanawha Piano Gallery, the Miles of Melodies 5K Run/Walk is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the University of Charleston.
Various music groups will be arrayed along the course to serenade runners and walkers with music throughout the race.
The Miles of Melodies 5K will not only be the initial race for the organization; it will serve as the final fundraising effort for ACC’s 2018-2019 year.
“The ACC is wrapping up its 28th year in West Virginia, where we have been able to positively impact over 3,700 children,” ACC Founding and Artistic Director Selina Midkiff said in a media release. “In all these years, we have never turned away a child because of financial hardship. In fact, 100% of our choristers receive some sort of financial assistance.
“We continue to be deeply appreciative of the community who attends our events and supports us so generously,” Midkiff said.
Awards will be presented by age group as well as first, second and third overall male and female finishers. Additionally, first-place male and female teams (composed of four members) and first-place mixed teams (two male and female members each) will receive awards. Special awards will also be presented to the best musically dressed as well as the best solo, duo and trio.
All proceeds from the 5K will support ACC in its mission to provide artistic excellence, a quality music education and opportunities while creating a positive effect on the lives of West Virginia’s youth.
