Based at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena, the Charleston Thunder Sled Hockey team received a grant recently from The Center for Active WV in Morgantown.

The Center for Active WV’s purpose is to increase the physical activity levels for children and adults in the state to meet or exceed the national physical activity recommendations and to improve the health and quality of life of all state residents.

Charleston Thunder Sled Hockey provides an ice hockey team for youth and adults with physical disabilities who cannot stand to skate. They practice Mondays from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena at 20 RHL Blvd. in South Charleston (near the Target department store).

All equipment and ice time are provided by the team for the players.

Charleston Thunder Sled Hockey was one of 12 nonprofit organizations in the state to receive this grant, spokesperson Linda Streets said in an email. The grant will be used to purchase protective hockey gear, to purchase at home exercise equipment and to finalize and print marketing material for the team, Streets said.
