Vintage West Virginia: Parade marshal

Legionnaire Frank L. Craner retired as parade marshal of Charleston Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but his patriotism as a World War I veteran remains undiminished. In 1969, for the first time in more than 30 years, he stands on the speakers’ platform to salute the flag as it passes on Quarrier Street in front of the federal building. Behind him is the Rev. Jacob MacKorell of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a military reserve chaplain. Craner’s duties as parade director always prevented him from being on the speakers’ stand. For this 1969 Memorial Day ceremony, he was named honorary parade marshal and stood on the platform. May 30, 1969 photo by Chet Hawes.
