The South Charleston Police Department shared this photo via Facebook on Sunday afternoon. The police car got stuck on railroad tracks during a chase, and was hit by a train.

A South Charleston Police Department cruiser was hit by a train Sunday after it got stuck on the railroad tracks during a chase.

The collision happened in Charleston, near the Montrose Drive exit of Interstate 64. The South Charleston officer was able to get out of the vehicle before the train hit it.

The chase began in the 4900 block on MacCorkle Avenue in South Charleston around 2:50 p.m. Police tried to stop a car with burned-out tail lights and no windows.

After a chase of 12 minutes, the police car’s front tire got caught on the train tracks.

The vehicle’s driver, Shyanne Carrino, 27, of Leon in Mason County, was found on Mountain Road, in Charleston, said South Charleston Police Cpl. Ricky Vineyard. She was being taken to South Central Regional Jail.

Shortly before Carrino was found, Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies found the vehicle on Danner Road. Two people who police say were passengers were taken into custody.

Police are still trying to determine why Carrino fled, Vineyard said.
