Free summer meal locations for children, teens opening across WV

Free summer meal locations for children and teens 18 years old or younger are opening across West Virginia, the state Department of Education announced Monday in a news release.

This year’s Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides nutritious meals at 450 sites across the state, the release said.

“During the school year, approximately 208,000 West Virginia schoolchildren depend on free and reduced-priced meals,” the release said. “However, in summer months, food insecurities often persist because these children do not have access to school breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack.”

County public school systems, churches, community centers, parks, recreation facilities and other organizations host the meal sites, the release said.
