Citing the unavailability of certified lifeguards, the Dunbar City Council voted during a special meeting Thursday not to open the city’s swimming pool this summer.

Dunbar Mayor Bill Cunningham said nine lifeguards are needed to operate the pool safely, and only one had applied for the position.

Calls made to locate other lifeguard candidates proved unsuccessful, he said.
