The Kanawha County Commission voted Wednesday to add two options to the $8.7 million base bid for the Shawnee Park Multi-Sport Complex, bringing the total cost of the project to nearly $10.3 million.
The add-ons included installing utilities and enhanced fencing at the complex’s baseball and softball fields, and adding cement stabilization under the ballfields’ artificial turf.
The commission opted to postpone adding other construction alternatives to the project, including lighting for all outdoor fields and a two-story press box/concession stand building serving the baseball fields.
“We’ll get around to the lighting and some of the other options as funds become available,” said Kent Carper, commission president.
After voting to add the two options, commissioners and Walter Hayslett, president of Hayslett Construction signed a contract for the work. Hayslett said a pre-construction conference will take place on Tuesday, after which construction would likely begin immediately.
The basic construction package includes a building with meeting and activity rooms that also houses a concessions area and restrooms serving the complex’s six collegiate-sized soccer fields.
“We hope to add the lighting and some of the other add-ons within the next few months,” said Commissioner Ben Salango.
In other developments, the commission voted to allow county employees to leave work at noon on Friday in observance of Christmas, and at noon on Dec. 29 to extend the New Year’s weekend.
