A Capital High School freshman was shot and killed Sunday in Kanawha County.

Da’nija L. Miller, 14, of Charleston, died Sunday afternoon shortly after a shooting was reported around 2 p.m. along Ryan Drive, in the Rutledge area of Kanawha County. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Brian Humphreys said several people have been questioned, and the investigation is ongoing as of Monday. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, he said.

“Several people that fled the scene were located and detained [Sunday]. They’ve since been released. Nobody is in custody, no charges have been filed yet,” Humphreys said. “We are conferring with the [Kanawha] Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues.”

Miller had recently started her first year at Capital after attending West Side Middle School last year, a Kanawha County Schools spokesperson said Monday. Additional school counselors and student support personnel were available at Capital, West Side Middle and Piedmont Elementary on Monday to support students and staff, she said.
