At capacity for the second time this year, the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is asking for help finding homes for dogs in its care.
The animal shelter had 143 adult dogs on site Tuesday and only 108 kennels to put them in, according to a news release from the organization.
“We have adult dogs everywhere — the puppy room, the cat room, office spaces, employee restrooms, and surgery holding areas are being utilized for the huge influx of stray dogs,” said Sarah Tolley, the humane association’s community engagement manager. “Our staff is doing everything we can to help these animals, but with more stray dogs arriving daily our resources are being stretched to the limit.”
The humane association is a life-saving shelter, which means it does not euthanize animals because of space. Being at capacity may mean it has to slow taking in animals until the ones in the shelter find homes, the news release said.
People can help by adopting, donating supplies such as Purina Dog Chow, Dawn dish detergent and paper towels, volunteering to walk a dog, or spreading the word that the shelter needs adoptions.
The shelter is open Tuesday through Friday from noon until 6 p.m., and from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
