Hundreds of people descended Wednesday on Kanawha State Forest to participate in three of several First Day Hikes scheduled across the Mountain State to mark the beginning of the new year.

First Day Hikes are held in all 50 states and, last year, attracted 55,000 hikers who logged 133,000 trail miles in total.

In addition to Kanawha State Forest, First Day Hikes were planned for Blackwater Falls State Park, Cacapon Resort State Park, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, Chief Logan State Park, Holly River State Park, North Bend State Park, Pipestem Resort State Park, Twin Falls Resort State Park, Tygart Lake State Park and Nitro’s Ridenour Lake.
