Man pleads to property crimes, set to stand trial for sexual assault

A Charleston man on Tuesday admitted to breaking into a Rite Aid and attempting to steal champagne from a Kroger in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Andreas Simpson pleaded guilty to one count each of felony entering without breaking and misdemeanor second-offense shoplifting before Judge Carrie Webster Tuesday morning.

A Kanawha grand jury in January indicted Simpson, 36, on four counts of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of breaking without entering and one count of shoplifting.

In exchange for pleading guilty to the shoplifting and breaking and entering charges, Kanawha Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Monica Schwartz agreed to drop the second breaking and entering charge. She also agreed to not invoke a recidivism charge against Simpson based on his previous convictions.

The sexual assault charges were severed from the rest of the charges, and Simpson is set to stand trial for those charges on Sept. 16.

Simpson admitted Tuesday that the tried to leave the Kroger at Riverwalk Plaza, in South Charleston, without paying for a bottle of champagne in October 2018.

He also said he tried to break into a Rite Aid along MacCorkle Avenue on Nov. 28, 2018, by smashing a window with a rock.

Webster scheduled Simpson’s sentencing hearing for July 29. He is incarcerated at South Central Regional Jail.
