Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay, has been selected as the Republican House of Delegates’ nominee for Speaker of the House.
The GOP delegates selected Hanshaw, vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, in a caucus Tuesday night at the state Capitol.
Speaker Tim Armstead, R-Kanawha, resigned last week to run for an open seat on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. He was appointed by Gov. Jim Justice on Saturday to hold a Supreme Court seat until the November general election.
The official election of interim speaker, with the nominees from each party caucus, will occur during a floor session at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Whoever is elected to the position will serve out the remainder of the term of the 83rd Legislature.
The majority House party will caucus in December to nominate a speaker for the 84th Legislature, who will be sworn in on Jan. 8, the start of the 2019 regular session.
