Gazette endorsement: Kent Carper is a fine county commissioner

For decades, Kent Carper has been a vigorous, brash, energetic public leader in the Charleston area.

First as state securities commissioner, then as an assistant prosecutor, then as Charleston police chief and, finally, as a long-time Kanawha County commissioner, Carper is a fixture of government, a public servant.

If you made a list of qualities you want in someone who holds elected office, Carper checks them all — conducts the public’s business in public, follows through, believes in open records and sharing public information, creates an environment where any resident is welcomed to speak in public meetings.

He is smart, hardworking and cares about his county.

He is still eager to serve and deserves to continue his public service. We heartily endorse Commissioner Carper for another term.
