Sen. Byrd grew beyond his bigotry and regretted it. I don’t know if Stonewall Jackson did.

Capitalism built America. Socialism will kill it. Wait and see. Capitalism is sustainable; socialism is not. Margaret Thatcher said it best when she said that the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money to spend. How true.

In West Virginia, hatred of gays is the policy of the Republican Party. Walters claims many Republicans are gay-friendly, but he is the first I’ve heard to contradict Mike Azinger and Melody Potter. Potter is the state chairwoman of the Republican Party.

To those moderate or conservative Democrats it’s time to face up to the fact your party is now controlled by radical leftist extremists. Each election going forward will now be an all out cage match to decide whether we go left or right.

I’ll say this. You show me a black person who was a slave and I’ll support paying that person reparations. No one alive today ever was or ever owned a slave. People today do not owe anyone anything for a practice that was ended and outlawed over 154 years ago. I think any and all reparations should be stopped immediately.

Chris Walters’ op-ed in Sunday’s edition reflects a thoughtful, fair and moral approach to non-discrimination in West Virginia. And as I watched from afar, I think he worked harder at the flood cleanup a few years ago — without seeking praise or attention. He wouldn’t know me, a liberal Democrat, if he ran into me. I hope he runs for office again. We need civility and kindness in government.

Very big heartfelt thanks to WVDOH for spraying weeds, cutting grass and brush along our highways. It makes it so much easier to see the potholes around the next curve.
