West Virginia’s trout anglers will get 69 sure-fire chances to cast their baits to freshly stocked trout this spring.
Division of Natural Resources officials have announced stocking dates for 29 lakes, rivers and streams. The stockings will all take place on Fridays and Saturdays, beginning on March 15 and ending on May 17.
“Friday and Saturday stockings provide a unique fishing opportunity for anglers who work or attend school during regularly scheduled trout stockings,” said DNR director Steve McDaniel. “Weekend stockings also help us recruit new anglers and help families make weekend plans at our beautiful state parks and forests.”
Most of the waters involved in the pre-announced stockings are located in or near state parks and forests.
In addition to the announced stockings, DNR hatchery personnel will stock fish at unannounced locations on Saturdays throughout the spring. Agency officials say efforts will be made to stock on Saturdays instead of Mondays where feasible.
The announced stockings are not “bonus” stockings. Waters slated for the announced stockings will receive the same number of pounds of trout they usually get.
Anglers who decide to fish during the announced stockings must have the necessary fishing license and trout stamp. No one is allowed to fish within 200 feet of hatchery staff while the stockings are taking place.
Friday and Saturday stockings will take place on the following dates near the following parks and forests. Stockings marked with asterisks (*) will receive “Gold Rush” stockings of golden rainbow trout:
