Wednesday, May 15

Seniors’ Luncheon/Hand Bell Concert: Teays Valley Church of God invites all seniors ages 55 and older to a free luncheon and hand bell concert at noon. The Hand Bell Choir of the Cross Lanes Christian School, under the direction of Madonna Estep, will perform a short concert during the meal. The event is just one of the year-long, monthly events hosted by the church’s “Young at Heart” group. In addition to their monthly luncheon, they conduct a Bible study for seniors each Thursday at 10 a.m. Call the church at 304-757-9222 to reserve a spot. Teays Valley Church of God is located at 185 Connection Point, just east of Rocky Step and Teays Valley Road.

Friday, May 17

Buffalo COG Yard Sale: The Buffalo Church of God will host a yard sale, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 17, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Hot dogs will be sold on Saturday.

NWC Indoor Yard Sale: The Nitro Women’s Club have an indoor yard sale and a hot dog sale, starting at 8 a.m. Friday, May 17, and 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18. The Women’s Club is located at Second Avenue and 23rd Street in Nitro.

Saturday, May 18

Democratic Women’s Luncheon/Line Dancing: The Putnam County Democratic Women’s Club will hold a luncheon and line dancing program at noon at the Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene in Hurricane. The cost is $12 per person, for a choice of a box lunch. RSVP and place lunch orders by Wednesday, May 15, by calling 304-727-1509.

ACC 5K Race (Run/Walk): The Appalachian Children’s Chorus will host its its inaugural Miles of Melodies 5K Race at the University of Charleston, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for children 18 and under using the code “student” and can be made at www.tristateracer.com. RCBI Workshop: The Robert C. Byrd Maker Vault is a workshop, Maker Fundamentals, in which participants will build a wooden hydraulic robotic arm. Starting at 10 a.m., this workshop is a light introduction to hydraulics, electromagnetism and mechanical systems for all ages. Participants learn to design the arm and cut it using the X Carve router in the Maker Vault. All materials and instructions are provided. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult at the workshop. Children who are members of Scouting organizations can earn Robotic and STEM badges. The cost is $18 per person, and parent participation is free if working with a child on his or her project. Parking is available on the municipal parking lot on Fourth Avenue in Huntington, across the street from RCBI. Registration is available online at wvmakes.com.

BACA Motorcycle Ride: The Kanawha Valley Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse will hold its annual 100-mile Motorcycle Ride, starting at Mountain Pie Company, 5930 MacCorkle Ave. St. Albans. Registration starts at 11 a.m. Pre-registrations and donations can be made at board@kv-wv.bacaworld.org. The entry donation is $15 per rider and $10 per passenger. Lineup is at 12:45 for the blessing of the bikes and final announcements; kick stands up at 1 p.m. There are multiple stops on the route where prize drawings will be given out. There is also an after party at 5 p.m., where the winners of the silent auctions and Red Box Raffle winners will be announced. There will also be a live auction during the evening. All riders are welcome and each rider is given a goodie bag at registration.

Retro Country: Retro Country will perform at the Nitro Senior Center, 302 21st St., Nitro, from 6 until 9 p.m. A $3 donation will be requested at the door. For more information, call 304-993-7693.

Sunday, May 19

Rock & Gem Club: The Kanawha Rock & Gem Club will meet at the Rock Lake Presbyterian Church in South Charleston. At 2 p.m., the Junior Geologists will learn “How to Identify Rocks by Using a Mohs Hardness Test Kit.” At 3 p.m., the KRGC will hold a short meeting. Following will be a presentation by Culann Delaney on “Chainmaille, Historical Overview of the Armor.” Delaney is a member of the Middle Ages Re-enactment Group, The Society for Creative Anachronism. In June, the club has a workshop planned for members to learn to how to use chainmaille in modern jewelry. The post-meeting project will be making simple chainmaille earrings. (Bringing two pairs of flat-nosed pliers is suggested.)

Civic Chorus Concert: The Hurricane Civic Chorus will present its spring concert, “A Song in the Valley!,” at 7 p.m. at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, 2848 Putnam Ave., Hurricane. The concert will include spirituals, classic love songs and other timeless works. The concert is free; donations will be accepted and appreciated. A small reception will follow.

Hurricane Community Band: Former high school and other musicians are invited to a rehearsal of the Hurricane Community Band. It will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Hurricane Middle School band room. The band will read through several pieces of music to prepare for its Fourth of July concert.
