Tim McCutchen, a freshman from Hurricane, kicked four field goals, and his 20-yarder late in the third quarter gave Charleston the lead for the first time as the Golden Eagles defeated winless Valparaiso 19-13 Saturday in Valparaiso, Indiana.
Valparaiso (0-4) took a 13-10 lead into intermission but was shut out in the second half while McCutchen kicked field goals of 39, 20 and 41 yards for the Golden Eagles (3-1). Charleston scored 10 points off three Valparaiso turnovers and held Valpo to 72 yards rushing and 49 passing.
Jimmy Seewald was held to six completions in 25 tries for 49 yards and was intercepted twice. He also opened the game with a 3-yard scoring pass to Alex Kluck.
Charleston tied it when Brant Grisel hit Tremaine Ross from the 10, but Valpo’s Dimitrios Latsonas added field goals of 30 and 42 yards. Grisel was 30 of 44 passing for 333 yards. He was intercepted twice.
West Virginia State 33, Concord 23: A strong second and fourth quarter propelled West Virginia State past Concord in Athens
After ending the first quarter tied at 3-3 following field goals from West Virginia State’s Martin Ahlstroe and Concord’s Luke Walls, the Yellow Jackets scored early in the second quarter when Isaiah Scott hauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Hensley. Donovan Riddick added a 26-yard touchdown run for West Virginia State.
Walls connected on a 42-yard field goal for Concord before Ahlstroe sent a 30-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired in the second quarter with the Yellow Jackets ending the first half ahead 19-6.
Concord was able to draw within three after the third quarter on a Derek Kincaid touchdown run and a third field goal from Walls.
In the fourth quarter the Mountain Lions took their first lead since the first quarter after Brett Butler caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Akin, putting Concord ahead 23-19.
West Virginia State took the lead for good when Scott caught his second touchdown pass from Hensley, pushing the Yellow Jackets ahead 26-23. Zach Pate scored an insurance score for West Virginia State (3-1 overall, 3-0 Mountain East) on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Riddick.
Concord drops to 0-4 overall and in the MEC.
