The West Virginia State women’s basketball team scored the last five points of the game to pick up a huge 94-89 road victory at West Liberty in the Mountain East Conference Saturday evening.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improve to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in league play. The loss sends West Liberty (6-3) to its second conference loss at 4-2.

With the game tied at 89, Destiny Fields hit what proved to the game-winning free throw for State with 1:47 to play. WVSU got two defensive stops and a big offensive rebound after a missed shot.

Kalia Cunningham hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to give State a three-point lead. After forcing a turnover, Payton Shears sealed the game with two free throws with two seconds left.

The Yellow Jackets trailed by six after the first quarter but outscored the Hilltoppers 33-18 in the second quarter to lead by nine at halftime. WVSU led by 11 in the fourth quarter before the West Liberty rally.

Fields poured in 20 points for State, Shelby Harmeyer added 13 points, Alana Kramer chipped in 12 and Cunningham contributed 10.

Corrine Thomas led West Liberty with 19 points and Audrey Tingle almost had a triple double with 15 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists.
