Hunter Shafer scored 23 points and Jacob Jones made two clutch free throws with 8.3 seconds left to help lock it up Tuesday night as host Pocahontas County earned an 84-81 boys basketball win over Charleston Catholic in the Class A Region 3 Section 1 semifinals.
Also for the Warriors (21-2), ranked No. 7 in the state poll, Logan Dilley had 17 points, Jarret Taylor 16, Brian Wilfong 12 and Elijah Robertson 11.
The Irish (13-10), who led at halftime 43-42, received 34 points from Will Jenkins, 19 from Robby Williams and 12 from Dom Martin.
Pocahontas, the No. 2 seed in the section, hosts No. 4 Webster County on Thursday in the finals. Both teams advance to the regionals, with the winner playing at home and the loser hitting the road.
Tug Valley 74, Sherman 35: Mason Layne had 20 points and 13 rebounds to pace the host Panthers to a Class A Region 4 Section 2 win. Also for Tug (16-7), Levi Davis scored 14 points and Tyler May 11. The Panthers led 39-13 in rebounds.
For the Tide (9-13), Chris Abbott scored 10 points and Eric Maloskey nine.
Ravenswood 103, Calhoun County 53: Isaiah Morgan had 28 points and five rebounds to pace the host Red Devils to a Class A Region 4 Section 1 win. Also for Ravenswood (22-1), Stephen Dawson chipped in 15 points and 15 rebounds and Jayden Rhodes added 11 points.
For Calhoun (9-13), Trevor Carder scored 14 points and Adam Parsons 12.
Webster County 67, Valley 56: Tyler Gray scored 21 points to pace the Highlanders on the road to a Class A Region 3 Section 1 upset win. Also for Webster County (16-6), Cole Taylor chipped in 13 points.
For Valley (19-3), the sectional’s top seed, Spencer Dean scored 17 points and Lucca Giannini 13. The Greyhounds were ranked No. 5 in the state poll.
Braxton County 78, Clay County 53: Cole Browning fired in 25 points in leading the Eagles to the home victory in AA Region 2 Section 2.
Jacob Oates added 16 points for Braxton (19-4), followed by Taylor Stout (11) and Jadyn Stewart (10). Thomas Haverty scored 15 points for Clay and Ryan Burdette had 12 points.
No. 1 seed Braxton County advances to host Nicholas County in the sectional championship game on Friday.
Parkersburg South 63, Spring Valley 36: Allie Taylor recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Patriots at home to a Class AAA Region 4 win. Also for South (20-3), Devin Hefner had a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds).
For Spring Valley (13-12), Madison Vaughn had 15 points.
Monday’s boys game
Sissonville 78, Point Pleasant 33: Watson Mosteller scored 15 points as the host Indians advanced in Class AA Region 4 Section 1. Also for Sissonville (13-10), Will Hackney had 11 points and Zack McCutcheon 10. The Indians visit No. 2 seed Winfield at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Kade Oliver’s eight points paced the Big Blacks (3-19).
