GW’s Michael Hughes signs with Appalachian State

George Washington kicker Michael Hughes smiles big after signing with the football program at Appalachian State during a small ceremony with his parents Debbie and Phil Hughes at the Holiday Inn in South Charleston Thursday night. Hughes is one of three Kanawha Valley players to sign with Division I programs during the NCAA early signing period, joining Poca’s Ethan Payne (Marshall) and South Charleston’s Zeiqui Lawton (Cincinnati).

George Washington All-State kicker Michael Hughes signed with the football program at Appalachian State Thursday evening.

Hughes is a two-time first-team All-State honoree in Class AAA. As a senior, he averaged 40 yards per punt, booted field goals of 47 and 42 yards and was 18 of 18 on extra points for the Patriots.
