West Virginia University senior catcher Ivan Gonzalez was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday.
Gonzalez, who the White Sox took with the No. 230 overall selection, was one of the Big 12’s top catchers in 2019. The Round Rock, Texas native posted a .294 batting average with three home runs and 34 RBIs in 214 at-bats as a senior for the Mountaineers.
Along with WVU junior pitcher Alek Manoah, who went to the Toronto Blue Jays with the No. 11 overall pick on Monday, Gonzalez is the second Mountaineer selected in this year’s draft. He is the 91st player in WVU history to be drafted — the 22nd under current coach Randy Mazey — and the 13th West Virginia baseball player picked in the draft’s first 10 rounds.
