Stephens Auto Center New Car Sales Manager Jeremy Toler has been in the car business long enough to know what makes a good automotive sales representative.

And he can’t say enough good things about his current team of sales professionals.

“This is the best group we’ve ever had by far,” Toler said.

Each of the four sales reps at Stephens Auto Center, which is a short drive down Corridor G near Danville from Charleston and the Kanawha Valley, brings a varied, non-auto sales background to the dealership.

And that’s a good thing, Toler said.

“They don’t have that typical car salesman mentality. They’re real and they relate to people very well,” he said. “They are customer-first.”

Sales rep Andrew Miller came to Stephens Auto with a background as an electrician in coal mining. Tanis Walker worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry. Joe Holstein was a manager for a rental business, and Jeremy Lloyd is selling cars while attending nursing school at the University of Charleston.

Regina Mullins, Stephens Auto Center’s longtime finance manager, agreed with Toler that having salespeople with varied backgrounds – not necessarily in sales — helps them relate better to their customers.

“They always follow up with everything. They’re the kind of people who have bought cars all their lives, and they knew what they were wanting when they were buying. They know what kind of customer relations to have,” Mullins said.

“Now they’re on this side (sales) of it,” Toler said. “And there are no egos at all.”

Once they start working at Stephens Auto Center, the sales reps receive excellent training that includes product knowledge and customer service.

Stephens Auto Center is a full-service dealership for Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. The sales team stays current on all new models, and they stay up-to-date on technological advancements on today’s vehicles.

“We train them on the (sales) process, but what’s good about it is they’re still being themselves,” he said.

Building good customer relations is important in car sales, and the Stephens Auto Center team is among the best at doing that.

For example, Lloyd sold four cars to one family based on the excellent feedback from the original sale.

“They just love him,” Mullins said. “It’s really good to make that impression on a customer and that they like you so much they’ll refer someone to you to buy a vehicle.”

Mullins said vehicle shoppers don’t like pushy salespeople.

“They like making their own choices,” she said.

Toler said he gets lots of positive customer feedback from those who have purchased vehicles from Stephens Auto Center.

“We’ve heard people say, ‘I’ve never had this great of an experience buying a car before.’”

Lloyd said being able to relate to customers helps him in his sales job.

“It’s just relating to people. You have to meet people where they’re at. I love it,” Lloyd said.

Miller and Holstein agreed that people skills are important.

“I have the gift of gab,” Miller said with a smile. “And I relate well to people.”

Stephens Auto Center has a great selection of new and pre-owned vehicles in stock. The pre-owned vehicle department is led by Used Car Manager Jody Johnson.
